LOCAL 340’S BUSINESS OFFICE NEWS

As we are nearing the end of another year, one that has been quite stressful to say the least, I would like to take this time to extend my appreciation to all our Brothers and Sisters. We continue to stay open via phone and email for our members. Please remember to call the hall at 916-927-4239 and dial 7 for our full list of directory to be connected to the correct person.

 

OPERATION CHRISTMAS BASKET

We are excited to announce we will be hold our first online raffle for Operation Christmas Basket this year. Due to the many unforeseen changes, rules and regulation prohibiting us to hold our normal membership meetings that we normally hold this raffle at we will be selling our tickets online and will hold a live drawing, which will be held on the first Wednesday of December. This raffle helps many Union families who may be experiencing a tough time throughout the year and into the holiday season. If you, a Union Brother or Sister are in need of assistance this holiday season whether that be a holiday meal or help with presents please reach out to our Office Manager Reyna Jimenez via phone at 916-539-0412 or email reyna@ibewlocal340.org. Please help support our efforts by purchasing tickets. Look out for emails and/or text reminders with the link to purchase tickets.

 

NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION

This is a reminder that we hold our New Member Orientation classes bi-monthly. Our class is for all new members who have made membership this year. It is held via Zoom and we encourage all new members and their spouses or significant others to attend this very informative class. It answers many questions regarding your membership, its benefits, and provides you with important contact information. If you recently joined and have not attended one of these classes it is imperative you call the hall to be scheduled to for our next class.

 

BASIC MONTHLY DUES

Please remember that it is your responsibility to ensure that your basic monthly dues are paid. Each month you should be receiving a yellow dues receipt on or around the first week. There are many ways to pay and check the status of your dues payment. We encourage you check our website www.ibewlocal340.org and sign on to view your dues status and other important information. You can pay online, mail in a check or money order, or also call the hall.

 

DEFERRED SAVINGS DEPOSITS – CHECKS

We have switched over to the new process for deferred savings for almost a year now and notice there are still quite a few members who have not turned in their form. It is imperative that all members get the necessary documents (EFT and voided check) turned in so we can effectively work the Trust Office to get the deferred savings deposits done in a timely matter. If you have questions regarding your deposits or need a form please contact Teresa Raney at 916-923-0666 and she will be happy to assist you.

Please remember that the although the Business Office is not currently open to the public, we are still here to answer all your questions or concerns. You may call us at 916-927-4239 and hit option 7 to hear our list of staff directory. Please be sure that if we do not answer right away you leave a message. We are experiencing high call volume right now but value every call we receive. Our top priority is taking care of our membership and assisting them in any way possible. A letter also be sent out to the membership with updates from the Office and Executive Board. This will have important information with dates and times for upcoming committee meetings. Please note that our Membership meetings are temporarily suspended at this time, but we are working behind the scenes to find ways to better serve all of you. We appreciate your patience and understanding in all of this as we navigate through each day.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS BASKET

It is hard to believe that the year is almost over. As we approach the upcoming holiday season with a much different mindset these days, we are aware there may have been many families effected by the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19. Therefore it is especially important we extend this invite to any Union member who is experiencing a hard time financially this year due to loss of work or illness. If you, a Union Brother or Sister are in need of assistance this holiday season whether that be holiday meal or help with presents please reach out to our Office Manager Reyna Jimenez via phone at 916-539-0412 or email reyna@ibewlocal340.org. We will of course be kicking off the raffle to help raise funds for these families and also be donating to local charities. Please help support our efforts by purchasing tickets. More details to come about buying the tickets.

NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION

By the time this reaches our membership we would have held our September 26th orientation class. We hold these classes bimonthly to help new and transferring members coming into our local to learn about their Union membership and benefits offered to them. It is a very informational class that we encourage members and their spouses to attend. Our next scheduled class will be held on November 7th. If you missed the last class pleas be sure to mark your calendars for this one.

BASIC MONTHLY DUES

Each member should be receiving a yellow dues receipt each month which states the basic monthly dues paid thru date. If you are not receiving these on a monthly basis it is important you reach out to us or check your basic monthly dues status online. These dues are owed on the first of the month every month.

DEFERRED SAVINGS DEPOSITS – CHECKS

We have been trying to contact all members who have not turned in their EFT form or have not yet deposited their checks. In order for the deposit to run smoothly please ensure you turn in the necessary documents; this includes a copy of a voided check or direct deposit slip with your EFT form. If you have questions regartding your deposits or need a form please contact Teresa Raney at 916-923-0666 and she will be happy to assist you.

REST IN PEACE

Retired Brother Gary Hunziker passed on August 18th. He was a 59-year member and 81 years of age.

Active Brother Ian Walsh passed on August 21st. He was a recently initiated member and 21 years of age.

Retired Brother Richard Crowder passed on September 15th. He was an 85-year member and 65 years of age.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to members’ families and loved ones.

IMPACTS OF THE COVID 19

As you all are aware from the most recent news, we are still not “out of the woods yet” with the current pandemic of COVID 19. I hope by the time this reaches you we are at a better place. The Business Office itself remains closed but as mentioned in last month’s article we are still conducting business as usual. Should you need to contact the hall you may do so by calling us at 916-927-4239, please be sure to press 7 for our directory to get connected to the appropriate personnel. We continue to send remain positive during this pandemic and hope to return to a “new” normal soon.

LOCAL 340’S BUSINESS OFFICE

With the current pandemic we are seeing happen around the world our staff is currently still working to provide our members with any help and guidance needed during this difficult time. Our dispatch is ever changing and adapting to fit the needs of our membership. Online signing has been going well and we have received an influx of job calls even during this time. If you need to reach our dispatcher you may do so by calling the hall at 916-927-4239 ext 1007 and speak with Mike Franklin or via email at dispatcher@ibewlocal340.org. We encourage our members to become familiar with our website (ibewlocal340.org) to pay dues, update contact info, check job call information and other Office news. You can also find our staff directory on the Contact Us page to reach anyone of our clerical staff and/or organizers.

DEFERRED SAVINGS DEPOSITS

I would like to remind our members who fall under the Inside Wireman, CECW, or Material Handler classifications you will need to turn in your EFT form to Teresa Raney at our Trust Office in order to receive your direct deposit. If you have not completed and turned in this form you may be receiving funds from January thru March in the form of a check very soon. For questions regarding bank deposits or to verify if you completed this form please contact Teresa at 916-923-0666.

IBEW Local 340 Harry R. Bain Scholarship Award –For Dependents

This year’s current winners are

Second Place: Mariah Sarabria – granddaughter of Retired Member Sylvester Wirtz

We would like to thank the applicants for entering this year. This is never an easy decision to make as all were excellent applicants. We hope to have the winners speak at an upcoming meeting when possible.

IBEW Founders Scholarship – For all IBEW members (not dependents)

The IBEW Founders’ Scholarship honors the dedicated wiremen and linemen who organized the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers on November 28, 1981. Each year the officers of the IBEW are pleased to offer its working members scholarships on a competitive basis. It is hoped that the awards will not only contribute to the personal development of our members but also steward the electrical industry that our founders envisioned. The award is for $200 per semester credit hour at any accredited college or university toward an associate’s, bachelors or postgraduate degree in an approved field. The maximum distribution is $24,000 per person over a period not to exceed eight years.

Any member interested in applying for the IBEW Founders Scholarship can do so by going on-line at www.ibew.org. Click on “Resources and Links” at the top, scroll down to the box labeled “Founders Scholarship”. You will receive information on this scholarship as well as be able to download the application.  These applications can also be picked up at the Business Office.  This scholarship is for any member who has been in continuous good standing and paid dues (without an Honorary Withdrawal for the four years prior to May 1, 2020). This is not a scholarship for your dependents.  All applications and required information must be mailed directly to the IBEW in Washington, DC and must be postmarked May 1, 2020.

Five Counties Central Labor Council Scholarship – For Dependents

The application deadline for this scholarship has passed.

We are sad to report the death of, Retired Member Paul Curdy’s mother, Nelli Curdy.

Also, Retired Member Richard Skapinok’s wife recently passed on April 7th.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all our members and their families during these times of uncertainty.

RISING HEALTH CONCERN OF COVID 19

At the time of writing this we are currently under the order to shelter in place until April 7th. Hopefully by the time this reaches you we are in better shape. We hope that our members and their loved ones remain healthy and safe. It is during times like this where we realize family and brotherhood are the core of what brings us together and what we need the most. Although our office doors are closed to the public please know that our staff is still diligently working to ensure our members are taken care of. Should you need to contact the hall you may do so by calling us at 916-927-4239, please be sure to press 7 for our directory to get connected to the appropriate personnel. Let us all remain hopeful and calm during this time.

LOCAL 340’S EFFORTS TO REMAIN OPEN

With the current pandemic we are seeing happen around the world our staff is currently still working to provide our members with any help and guidance needed during this difficult time.

We have migrated to online dispatching. You can now sign via email by sending your payroll removal slip (if you were previously dispatched out of our local), your name card number and book you would like to sign onto. We are constantly changing this process so please be sure to check our website (ibewlocal340.org) for current news. DEFERRED SAVINGS

As mentioned in our last article, all CECWs and Inside Wireman (including apprentices) should have turned in the ACH form to have their deferred savings funds deposited in to. If you have not done so you will need to get that set up otherwise your dues will be dispersed on a quarterly basis from the Trust Office. For those who have turned in the form and have not seen a deposit there may have been an issue with reading your account numbers so please reach out to Teresa Raney if you believe this is your case. Any member who has any other questions or concerns, please contact Teresa at 916-923-0666.

Five Counties Central Labor Council Scholarship – For Dependents

There will be three $1,500 scholarships available this year for members who are parents or grandparents of graduating high school seniors. The applicants must be graduating high school in the Fall of 2019 or Spring of 2020 and plan to enroll in an accredited college for at least 12 units the subsequent academic year. Eligible applicants will be selected by random drawing at the April 23, 2020 meeting of the Five Counties Central Labor Council. Applicants can be obtained from the Five Counties CLC at 900 Locust St, Rm 7, Redding, CA 96001, by email at FiveCountiesCLC@ymail.com or thru phone/text: 530-949-7795. Applications must be received by the Five Counties CLC no later than April 22, 2020.

INSIDE WIREMAN’S FEBRUARY 1, 2020 WAGE ALLOCATION

As you were notified, the Inside Wireman’s Allocation Meeting to discuss and vote on the previous negotiated $1.00 increase was held on January 18, 2020. After a very thorough discussion, a vote was taken, and it was approved to put $0.50 to Pension and $0.50 to Health & Welfare. We appreciate all those who attended the meeting and participated in this allocation vote. We have notified the Inside Employers of the February increase.

BASIC DUES INCREASE FOR ALL MEMBERS

Please remember that basic monthly dues have increased effective January 1, 2020 for ALL members. If you have not already done so, please be sure to note this change in your next payment.

END OF YEAR DUES STATEMENTS

As you all know, we have recently changed programs and we are diligently working to get the information need to send out the tax statements. This statement will provide dues information for basic and working dues for members who paid dues in 2019. They will be sent by email so please be sure we have your current information on file. If you would like your statement mailed, please contact the hall.

NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION CLASS

Our next class is coming up soon! We will be sending reminders to anyone who had not previously attended.  Please be sure to attend the next class on Saturday, February 29, 2020. Call the Hall if you have any questions.

CHANGES TO DEFERRED SAVINGS

By now both Inside and CECW members should have received a letter stating the changes to deferred savings. Along with the letter stating the changes we mailed a form that needed to be turned into the Sacramento Area Electrical Trust Office to Teresa Raney. If you have not yet turned in this form, please do so immediately. If you have any questions, please contact Teresa Raney at 916-923-0666.

SPORTSMANS CLUB EVENTS

 “Annual Dog Training & Shooting Holes in the Sky”

On February 23, 2020 @ 8AM at Yankee Slough the Sportsman Club will hold this annual event. If you are interested in hunting and training dogs for hunting you don’t want to miss this event! “Day on The Bay”

They are also booking spots for their annual fishing trip in San Francisco Bay on Saturday, May 30th. They will be fishing for halibut and striper bass and it looks to be another great year! The cost is $155 per person and this includes a custom commemorative T-shirt. This event sells out fast, so don’t delay! You can contact Brother Jason Green to book a spot @ 916-716-6845.

IBEW Local 340 Harry R. Bain Scholarship Award –For Dependents

IBEW Local 340 is once again going to award two college scholarships in 2020 ($1,000.00 and $500.00).  These scholarships are available to sons, grandsons, daughters, granddaughters or legal dependents of members of Local 340.  The General Rules and Instructions, as well as the application, can be picked up from the Sacramento Business Office or the Redding Office.  You can also call either of these offices to request they be mailed to you. Please note:  the completed application must be received in the Sacramento Business Office by March 13, 2020 to be considered.

LABOR DAY FAMILY PICNICS 09/03/19 – ALL WELCOME

Sacramento Central Labor Council Picnic will be held on Labor Day from 5:00 PM – 8:30 PM at Fairytale Town in William Land Park.

Redding’s Central Labor Council Picnic will be held at Anderson River Park starting at 11:00 AM.

IBEW PERCAPITA DUES INCREASE FOR “A” MEMBERS ONLY

Future dues increases were approved at the 39th IBEW International Convention held in 2016. In accordance with Article IX of the IBEW Constitution all “A” member per capita dues will increase by $1.00 per month effective with January 2020 dues.  If you pay in advance, please be sure to include the increase with your payment. 

Speaking of dues, 39 members had to pay reinstatement fees in July as they were over 3 months in arrears.  That means that 39 members were not in good standing and were not covered by the IBEW death benefit had anything happened to them.  Please remember – basic dues are due on the 1st of each month for THAT month. We offer multiple way to pay your dues: in person, online and over the phone via credit card.  Check your dues receipt now. Are you current?

MEMBERSHIP PICNIC – SATURDAY 9/14/19

Hagan Community Park in Rancho Cordova – All members are invited to bring your families to this all free family event! Carnival games, snow cones, balloon artist, hamster balls and jump houses as well as those friendly competition games between Journeymen and Apprentices. Hope to see you there!  Also, if you signed up to help, be sure to check in at the Volunteer Table to sign in, pick up your gift and to see what you will be doing and when.  Thank you all! The hard work of our Picnic Committee members, the Local 340 Office Staff and the Picnic Volunteers are the reason this picnic is always a huge success.

M&J ELECTRIC DONATES TO NORTHERN OFFICE

340 HORSESHOE TOURNAMENT

For any member who likes to play horseshoes, the Annual Local 340 Horseshoe Tournament is going to be held on Saturday September 7th at the home of Sister Sandi Abbott at 1249 C Street, Rio Linda, CA. It will begin with signups at 10AM and start at 11AM.  Contact Sister Abbott at 916-502-7476 for further information. All are welcome.

NEW IBEW BABY

Brother Layn Strickland and wife Jordann are the proud parents of a new baby boy.  “William Gerald” was born on July 27th at 7 pounds 6oz. Layn is one of our Northern members working at the Burney Forest Power Plant. Congratulations Brother.

 

ACCIDENTS & ILLNESSES

Patty Paterson, our current Projects Coordinator is happy to finally be on the other side of her multiple arm surgeries. She is back to work and has recently informed me that after serving 23+ years with our Union, she will be retiring from IBEW Local 340 at the end of this year and might be moving out of State.  Patty is looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible at this year’s picnic.

REST IN PEACE

We are sorry to report Brother Joe Becker’s wife Joan passed away in early July.

It is with a heavy heart I report that a young IBEW apprentice from Local 332’s family was involved in the Gilroy shooting.  His 6 year old son Stephen was killed and two of his family members were hospitalized. CIVIL SERVICE UNIT MEETING – Quarterly on the 3RD Thursdays of January, April, July & October at the Hall. NEXT QUARTERLY CIVIL SERVICE MEETING Thursday October 17th @ 5:00PM – Note: five (5) members needed to have a quorum.
