LABOR BULLETIN

BUSINESS MANAGER BOB WARD

April / May 2018

GROWTH & CHANGE

Just since the 1st of the year, your Organizers have brought in 55 new members and signed up 4 new Local 340 signatory employers; Voltage Specialists, H Electric Hankins Electric and Duy Electric. This is going to be a great year for Local 340. The work will be plentiful, we will be moving to our new home in Rancho Cordova and we will continue to grow in membership.

Local 340 dispatcher Brother Michael Franklin has taken the time in the last few months to meet with dispatchers from other Locals on their procedures. He then consulted with the designer of our Dispatch Software Program and will be bringing some new ideas to the table that he feels will definitely improve our referral procedures. I am very pleased with Brother Franklin’s positive dynamics that he has brought into the Business Office. He has become a very vital part of our team.

For more details on these issues and more, come to the Monthly Union Meetings on the 1st Wednesdays of the month still held here at the Hall on El Centro Road. Don’t get your information second-hand. The most up-to-date information is shared at the meetings, so make it a point to attend your meetings and be the first to know what is going on with your Local Union

NOTE! The May and June meetings will be held on the 1st Wednesdays, but the July meeting has been moved to the 2nd Wednesday 7/11) due to the 4th of July Holiday falling on our regular meeting date. Please make a note of this date change and again, we will let you know the minute we move to the new building. In the meantime, all business is still at El Centro Road in Sacramento.

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS:

It was very challenging to pick the winners of the Harry Bain Scholarship as each of the three applicants were incredible. It really was neck and neck with academic achievements, community involvement, etc. Therefore, the Executive Board approved a motion to grant all three of this years’ applicants an award this year. Congratulations to the winners and to their parents and grandparents for raising such brilliant and upstanding citizens.

1st Place – Michele Amber Campbell (granddaughter of 60 year retired member Brother Burt Campbell)

2nd Place – Jasmine Aliah Prasad (daughter of active member Brother Jason Prasad)

3rd Place – Esperanza Marie Damian (daughter of active member Brother Gilbert Damian)

These young ladies and their families, have been invited to attend our July 11, 2018 Membership Meeting to read their “Why Unions Are Good For America” essays which were part of their applications. They will be presented their certificates and scholarship awards at the July 11th meeting.

CLAY SHOOT

Local 340 was once again a major sponsor of the 7th Annual IBEW Nor-Cal Clay Shoot this year and it was a good time. Locals 1245 and 180 planned a great event that went off without a hitch and I want to shout out a special thanks to my staff and the members of Local 340’s Sportsman’s Club for truly showing up and helping with all of the preparations to ensure a great day for IBEW members and their families. The funds raised each year go to the Boys & Girls Club of America.

IBEW 340 DAY AT THE BAY

This annual Fishing Trip is currently scheduled for Saturday August 11th. Tickets are $140.00 each which does include a T-shirt commemorating the day. If interested in receiving more information or getting a spot on the boat, contact Brother Jason Prasad @ 916-801-6221 or Brother Jason Green @ 916-716-6845.

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP PICNIC – SATURDAY 09/15/18

If you want to be part of this year’s Picnic Volunteer Committee, call Reyna at the Hall. Help in the planning of the picnic and help on picnic day is always needed and greatly appreciated.

ACCIDENTS/ILLNESS

Robert Odehnal suffered a little heart scare recently but after a short stint in the hospital and the insertion of a stint, he is on the mend and hoping to return to work soon!

Brother Justin Gomez had a bit of a setback in March and wound up in the hospital for surgery. As of this writing (April 19th), he is now back home and working on getting stronger. The paperwork for his 2nd kidney transplant has been submitted and once he recovers from this latest setback, he should be good to go. Please continue to keep him in your prayers.

Brother Bill Vice stopped in the Hall recently. Over a year ago, Brother suffered a broken neck in a truck accident. He is still needing our prayers and positive thoughts as his recovery has not been as fast or as complete as he was hoping. Brother Vice wants you to know though, he plans to still be at his “beverage spot” at this year’s membership picnic on September 15th. Get Well Brother.
