Health and Welfare: $8.58 - this represents medical, dental, vision, and a supplemental plan for medical retirement benefits.
Medical: Current choices are either Kaiser or Health Net. These are very good medical plans that cover yourself and your dependents.
Dental: Current choice is Delta Dental. This coverage is for you and your dependents.
Vision: Current Choice is Vision Care. This coverage is for you and your dependents.
Supplemental: This is a contribution of $.50 that goes into a private account in your name. (This is included in the $8.58 contribution). This is an account to help with your medical costs when you retire. The account is invested as a group and you receive an annual accounting of your contribution and the investment results. This account can be used to supplement the difference in coverage on certain items, such as dental, vision, hearing aids and other items listed at the Health and Welfare office at the local union center. There is a menu provision within this plan for additional contributions that will be taken off of you hourly wage if you so chose this menu option.
Local Pension: $2.50 this represents a contribution into a retirement account in your name. Your employer reports every hour that you work to the Health and Welfare office. $2.50 for every hour is then put into your account. The account is looked after and invested as a group by the Pension Fund Committee. This committee is made up equally of employers and union people. A yearly report is issued showing the contributions to your account and the investment result. The are 3 options for the contribution. Your base wage of $ 38.43 includes the $2.50 contribution and is called a Class "A" pension option. Class "B" option is $4.50. Should you chose this option the your hourly wage would be $ 36.43. Class "C" option is $8.00. Should you choose this option your hourly wage rate will be $32.93.
There are also options on how you want your money invested. These menu items are listed in the Pension office located in the union office area. You can choose from the menu or let the Pension Fund Committee invest your account in the group account.
NEBF: 3% National Electrical Benefit Fund is administered by the IBEW at the International level in Washington, DC. For every year that you work over 300 hours under the agreement for signatory contractors, you are credited with 1 year service. The current rate of payment is $ 32.00 per month for year of service. Upon retirement and meeting the requirements of the fund you will receive a monthly check for the amount of service you have in the plan. Example: 30 years service is $ 32.00 x 30 = $ 960.00 per month when you retire.
Note: There is also an IBEW Pension plan based on years of service. This will be covered in the Dues section below.
Training Fund: $1.37 this contribution is used to fund the apprenticeship and journeyman training programs.
LMCT: $.97 Labor Management Cooperation Committee Trust Fund is made up of a joint committee of labor and management. The moneys are used to promote the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the National Electrical Contractors Association (IBEW/NECA) as an electrical industry within our community. Our logo "NECA/IBEW Working Together" is a result of a program to let the public know that we are working together as a labor management group. We truly are partners with management.
Contract Administration: 1.6% this contribution is used to pay for the staff and expenses needed to administer the various accounts and funds.
Fringe Benefits: These are benefits that you receive outside of your hourly wage. They include:
Vision Insurance
Dental Coverage
Medical Coverage
Medical Retirement Supplement
Local Pension
NEBF Pension
IBEW Pension
Credit Union
IBEW Death Benefit
Deferred Savings: 12% or 20% is deducted from your hourly wage and placed in an account at the credit union in your name. These moneys are deducted on a weekly basis from your check and are posted to your account when your employer reports your hours to the business office at the end of each month. Your account earns interest and a quarterly statement is sent to you. You can draw money out of this account at any time. The intent of this account is to provide a means of savings for a vacation or other needs.
As an example, we use the figure of 10% to explain this process:
10% x
40 hrs x
4 wks x |
$ 38.43
$ 3.85
$154.00
|
= $ 3.85
= $154.00
= $ 616.00
|

In this example your employer on your behalf would place in your account $ 616.00 in the credit union at the end of the month.
Dues: Dues are broken down into these categories, Monthly International, Working Dues.
International Dues: Beginning January 1, 2010 $36.00 a month is the current monthly International dues for a Journeyman. This money is used to fund our International office in Washington DC. The money is used for a great variety of things, such as research, training, lobbying, pension administration, promotion of the industry, death benefits, administration cost and expenses and a wide variety of other activities. A portion of that money is sent back to the local union to administer the accounts related to the International office. Your International Pension is received from these dues contributions. The pension relates to years of service in the IBEW. The qualification for this retirement are written in the International by-laws. The current rate is
$ 4.50 for every year of service.
Example:
Member since 1970: 1970 - 2009 = 39 x 4.50 = $ 175.50
Total IO Pension per month: $ 175.50
Working Dues:
Wiremen: Effective June 1, 2009 - these dues will be 8.5% of the Journeyman Inside Wireman's Option B wage rate per hour on all hours worked. This works out to $3.10 per hour.
Inside Apprentices pay 2% of their gross wages.
These moneys are used to run the local union. They are used for a wide variety activities including managing, promotion, office expenses, field work, attending conferences and seminars on the industry, political events and meetings, staff salaries, lawyer expenses, accounting expenses, and many other costs associated with managing the business of the local. These monies are also used to recover work in our jurisdiction by means of, organizing non-union workers, promoting the union, education, research, targeting specific jobs, paying organizers salaries and expenses, attending workshops, and many other related expenses. This has been a great sacrifice by the members, but has been a tremendous tool in the industry. Our union has grown over the last few years and we have been able to bring the standard of living up for countless workers and their families who have come into the union
