Contributions
Health and Welfare Benefits
are part of your negotiated wage package, paid in addition to your hourly wage rate. Our current Collective Bargaining Agreement includes an hourly health and welfare contribution (for current rate, see "dues & Wages). $.50 per hour of that contribution is deposited in the members Supplemental Health and Welfare Account and the remaining hourly amount earns the member one hour credit in his/her "Dollar Bank". While your employer pays you weekly, all benefits -- Health and Welfare, as well as pension, deferred savings and working dues -- are paid monthly to the Sacramento Area Electrical Workers Health and Welfare Trust Fund which disburses benefits to various accounts on your behalf. Your employer is required to make all payments by the 15th of the month following the month in which the contributions were earned..

Therefore, whether you start working the first day of the month or the last day of the month, the contractor is required to make the benefit payment by the 15th day of the following month.

If you have any specific questions pertaining to Health and Welfare issues:

Supplemental Health and Welfare Account

This is an account each member has with the SAEW Trust. In 1990 at the request of the membership these accounts were established. Members retiring between the ages of 55 and 62, are not eligible for Medicare, and once they were no longer covered by SAEW, were forced to purchase supplemental health care plans that were subject to taxes. By Utilizing this plan members are able to purchase health care services tax-free. The funds can also be used for non-retirement years for reimbursement of COBRA payments.

$.50 of the Health and Welfare current contribution is put into your Supplemental account per hour. Each member can choose to defer, from their hourly wage, an additional $1.00 or $2.00. It is tax deferred and not subject wor working dues assessment. The funds are deposited in an interest bearing account that compounds interest monthly. Each member receives an annual contribution and interest statement. If you do not have enough hours in the dollar hour bank for coverage, don't forget what the Supplemental Account is for.

For further information on your Supplemental Health and Welfare Account contact Karlene Maffei at (916) 923-0666
